Ball Valves

Manual ball valves are quarter-turn valves commonly used to control or isolate the flow of liquids and gases in plumbing systems, industrial pipework, and process applications. Ball valves get their name from the spherical ball inside the valve body, which contains a bore through its centre.

When the valve is open, the bore is aligned with the pipeline, allowing fluid to flow through the valve. When the valve is closed, the bore is rotated perpendicular to the flow path, shutting the valve off completely. On most manual ball valves, the handle is parallel to the pipeline when open and perpendicular when closed, allowing quick visual indication of valve position. Ball valves are primarily designed for isolation duties, although partially open positions may be used in some applications.

Available in materials including brass, stainless steel, and chrome-plated brass, RS Singapore is a supplier of water ball valves, plumbing ball valves, and industrial ball valves from trusted brands that include Siemens, Festo, and Legris. Ball stop valves are widely used because they offer relatively low flow resistance and rapid quarter-turn operation.

Types of Water Ball Valves

Ball valves are commonly classified by their ball-support mechanism and body construction. Understanding these distinctions helps ensure the correct valve is selected for the intended operating pressure, maintenance requirements, and service conditions.

By Ball Mechanism and Support

  • Floating Ball Valves: The ball is supported primarily by the valve seats and can move slightly in response to line pressure. Floating water ball valves are widely used in commercial, industrial, and water-service applications and are commonly found in small- to medium-sized valve installations in plumbing and water distribution applications.
  • Trunnion-Mounted Ball Valves: The ball is mechanically supported by trunnions at the top and bottom of the valve. This design reduces the operating torque required under higher pressures and is commonly used in larger-diameter and higher-pressure industrial pipeline applications.

By Body Construction

  • 1-Piece Ball Valves: These valves feature a single-body design that provides a compact construction with fewer body joints and potential leak paths. Maintenance options are generally limited because the valve body is not designed to be disassembled.
  • 2-Piece Ball Valves: Two-piece ball stop valves consist of two body sections and are among the most commonly used configurations in industrial, commercial, and general plumbing systems. They offer a practical balance of cost, performance, and serviceability.
  • 3-Piece Ball Valves: Three-piece plumbing ball valves are designed so that the centre section can typically be removed while the valve ends remain connected to the pipeline. This facilitates maintenance, cleaning, and replacement of internal components without disturbing adjacent pipework.

Applications of Plumbing Ball Valves

Ball valves are used wherever reliable, fast shut-off control is required across industrial, commercial, and residential plumbing systems in Singapore.

  • Oil and Gas: Ball stop valves are widely used in oil and gas pipelines to isolate sections of the system, control flow, and facilitate maintenance. Full-port and trunnion-mounted designs are commonly used where reduced pressure loss and reliable shut-off are important operational requirements.
  • Water and Wastewater Treatment: Water ball valves are used throughout water-treatment and wastewater-treatment systems to isolate equipment, control flow paths, and support maintenance activities. Their quarter-turn operation enables rapid isolation when required.
  • Food and Beverage: Stainless steel ball valves are specified in food and beverage processing for their corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning, controlling the flow of water, cleaning agents, and product fluids throughout production lines.
  • Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology: Pharmaceutical manufacturing requires ball valves meeting strict hygienic standards. Stainless steel and PTFE-seated plumbing ball valves are used in process fluid control and utility systems where contamination prevention is critical.
  • Petrochemical: High-performance ball stop valves control the flow of aggressive fluids and gases under high pressure and temperature conditions in petrochemical plants. Valve specifications, materials, pressure ratings, and seat materials should be selected according to the process conditions and media involved.
