An SFP stands for Small Form-Factor Pluggable also known as miniGBIC (gigabit interface converter). An SFP module is a compact optical modular transceiver used in communication networks that plugs into an SFP port on a network switch, media converter or server for transmitting and receiving data over fibre. SFP transceivers usually have a fibre LC connector and work with either single mode optical fibre (single-mode SFPs) or multimode optical fibre (multi-mode SFPs). Fibre SFP transceiver modules can connect a single network device to a wide variety of fibre cable distances and types and have a high-speed data transmission rate. SFP transceiver modules are also hot-pluggable and easily swapped in so adjustments to existing networks can be made easily without having to redesign the entire cable infrastructure.
