Conductivity Meters

A conductivity meter, also known as an electrical conductivity (EC) meter, is an instrument that measures how well a solution conducts electrical current. The reading reflects the concentration of dissolved ions, such as salts, acids, or bases, present in the solution.

This makes conductivity meters an essential tool for water quality monitoring, process control, and laboratory testing across a wide range of industries. RS Singapore stocks a wide range of conductivity meters across various accuracy levels, resolutions, and form factors to suit laboratory, field, and process applications. Browse the range and find the right instrument for your testing needs.

Operating Principle of Conductivity Meters

  • Electrical Conductance Measurement: Conductivity meters apply an alternating voltage across electrodes and measure the resulting current flow through the solution. Conductance is directly proportional to the concentration of dissolved ions.
  • Cell Constant and Geometry: Measured conductance is converted to conductivity using a cell constant, which is determined by the geometry and spacing of the electrodes. Accurate calibration ensures correct conversion for different probe designs.
  • Temperature Influence: Ion mobility increases with temperature, causing conductivity readings to vary accordingly. Temperature sensors within the probe or conductivity instrument compensate for this effect to provide standardised readings.
  • Inductive Measurement Method: Inductive sensors use an alternating magnetic field to induce current in the solution, allowing conductivity to be measured without direct electrode contact. This reduces fouling and makes the method well-suited to harsh or dirty environments.

Types of Conductivity Instrument

Conductivity meters are available in several formats, each suited to a particular use case and operating environment. The right choice depends on where the testing happens, how often it is carried out, and the level of precision required.

By Design

  • Benchtop: Benchtop meters are designed for laboratory and quality control settings where accuracy, repeatability, and a stable working environment are the priority. They typically offer larger displays, advanced calibration features, and the ability to log results across extended testing sessions.
  • Portable (Handheld): Portable models are built for fieldwork and site testing, with rugged housings and battery operation that allow readings to be taken outside the lab. A handheld electrical conductivity meter is the standard choice for environmental monitoring, water quality checks, and on-site process inspections.
  • Pocket (Pen): Pocket or pen-style instruments are compact, lightweight, and designed for quick spot checks. They are well suited to hobbyist use, basic field screening, and applications where portability matters more than high-resolution measurement.

By Sensor Technology

  • Contacting Sensors: Contacting sensors use two or four electrodes immersed in the solution to measure electrical conductance. They are widely used for low- to medium-conductivity applications such as drinking water, laboratory samples, and general-purpose testing.
  • Inductive Sensors: Inductive (toroidal) sensors measure conductivity using electromagnetic coupling without direct contact between electrodes and the solution. This makes them better suited to high-conductivity, contaminated, or aggressive solutions where electrode fouling would compromise a contacting sensor.

Industrial Applications of Conductivity Tester

A conductivity tester is a core piece of equipment across industries that depend on water quality, chemical purity, or process consistency. The instrument's ability to deliver fast, repeatable readings makes it valuable wherever ionic content needs to be tracked.

  • Wastewater Treatment: Wastewater treatment plants use a conductivity meter to monitor the ionic content in influent and effluent streams. Continuous readings help ensure treated water meets regulatory limits and that treatment processes are running within their target parameters.
  • Pharmaceutical: Pharmaceutical manufacturing relies on ultrapure water for product formulation, equipment cleaning, and validation. A conductivity measuring device is used to confirm that water for injection (WFI) and purified water meet the strict pharmacopoeia limits set for ionic content, with detailed records kept for compliance and audit purposes.
  • Food and Beverage Processing: In food and beverage facilities, an EC conductivity meter helps verify the cleanliness of clean-in-place (CIP) systems by checking rinse water for residual cleaning agents. Conductivity is also used to monitor the consistency of liquid products such as dairy, juices, and brewing ingredients.
  • Chemical Manufacturing: Chemical plants use conductivity instruments to track concentrations of acids, bases, and salts during reaction and dilution stages. Real-time readings allow operators to adjust dosing accurately, maintaining product specifications without overshooting target concentrations.
  • Oil & Gas and Marine: In oil, gas, and marine operations, an electrical conductivity tester is used to assess salinity in produced water, ballast water, and cooling systems. The data supports corrosion control programmes and confirms that discharge complies with environmental regulations.

Key Considerations When Selecting a Conductivity Meter

  • Measurement Range and Accuracy: The meter must match the expected conductivity range of the application, from ultra-pure water (µS/cm) to highly conductive solutions (mS/cm or higher). Accuracy and resolution requirements depend on whether the application involves laboratory analysis or general field monitoring.
  • Temperature Compensation: As conductivity is temperature-dependent, automatic temperature compensation (ATC) is essential for reliable and comparable readings. Instruments should support a standard reference temperature, typically 25°C, for consistent measurement.
  • Sensor Type and Chemical Compatibility: The choice between contacting and inductive sensors depends on solution properties, including conductivity level, contamination, and chemical aggressiveness. Correct material compatibility ensures sensor longevity and measurement stability.
  • Calibration and Maintenance Requirements: Regular calibration using standard solutions is necessary to maintain measurement accuracy. Some instruments offer multi-point calibration and built-in diagnostics to simplify maintenance and support traceable results.
  • Portability and Environmental Protection: Field applications may require handheld meters with rugged construction and an appropriate ingress protection (IP) rating. Adequate environmental resistance is important for reliable operation in outdoor or industrial conditions.
